Intellectual Property recruitment specialists Fellows and Associates have recently announced their partnership with leading firm of European patent and trade mark attorneys Haseltine Lake.

Fellows and Associates, a recruitment and management consultancy focused on the international Intellectual Property sector, are lending their expertise to recognised private practice Haseltine Lake in the recruitment of additional patent attorneys with a background in mechanical engineering for their operation in Bristol.

Haseltine Lake strive to set themselves apart from their competitors in the IP field by adopting an in-house approach, providing commercial and strategic IP advice, coupled with a vast range of technologies indicative of a private practice. They complete a range of highly consultative work, including negotiation of settlement agreements, competitor portfolio and product analysis and the creation and implementation of client IP policies in conjunction with decision makers at Board Level. They enjoy a strong international profile, with a vast amount of their direct client work originating from overseas. They ensure that their patent attorneys are indispensable to their clients and that they are key contributors to the development and commercialisation of their IP portfolio.

As well as acting in an advisory capacity to their clients, Haseltine Lake offer the full gamut of ‘everyday’ patent duties, such as invention harvesting, infringement and validity advice, freedom-to-operate opinions and the drafting and prosecution of patent portfolios.

Fellows and Associates have been stretching their creative legs in devising an advertising concept fitting of Haseltine Lake’s ethos of offering a progressive environment for their attorneys. Phillipa Field, Consultant, explains “it can be quite a task distinguishing between particular opportunities, especially when most roles in the Intellectual Property sector can offer similar responsibilities, at least on face value. We find that words such as ‘different’, ‘unique’ and ‘progressive’ can be severely overused and under explained by recruiters when writing job descriptions. However in the case of Haseltine Lake, they know exactly what separates them from the norm and are not afraid to communicate this to the candidate.”

This readiness of Haseltine Lake to divulge their own interpretation of “progressive” was highlighted in a recent article published on the Fellows and Associates website. Lesley Evans, Chief Executive of Haseltine Lake, was challenged to explain what it is they can offer compared to their competitors in the IP field. In the article Lesley muses “for a firm to be progressive, it has to have defined what progress it is trying to make in its markets and its organisational capabilities.  I don’t think you can be progressive in the abstract – so you have to have some goals and objectives and to be looking as expansively as possible at how those can be achieved.”

Haseltine Lake have distanced themselves from the “abstract” Lesley describes by offering prospective candidate a clear outline of their goals and objectives for the future of both the firm and its attorneys. Pete Fellows, Managing Director at Fellows and Associates, says “it is clear that Haseltine Lake are fully committed to the recruitment process and have been heavily involved in all aspects of the campaign to date. I think their detailed input and emphasis on clearly defining on what makes them different will aid them immensely in attracting suitable candidates”.
